Long ago, before remembrance, the madness appeared. Slow at first, but soon all-engulfing, turning pokemon against human. Our once great civilization fell and humankind seemed to be doomed as well.
Eventually, though, came the rise of the Great Tribes. Each armed with their own unique magic to control the madness of pokemon and empower them in order to prevail in this new world.
You are a Chosen. One of the few chosen by the magic of your Tribe and blessed with the power to tame pokemon and keep their madness at bay.
Setting mechanics
There is no way to prevent a pokemon from evolving.
All pokemon evolve once they reach the appropriate level, without the need of Evolution Stones.
Only pokemon which cannot evolve past underdog should be tamed. (See below)
Madness
All wild pokemon have a Madness level. It starts at zero and goes up to 3.
A wild pokemon makes a Madness roll
1. When it encounters a group of humans or tame pokemon.
2. For each 5 minutes it interacts with humans or tame pokemon.
3. When it is attacked by a human or tamed pokemon.
Making a Madness roll
Add up all of the pokemon's Base Stats and roll 1d100. If you roll under the total, increase the Madness level by 1 and do a Madness roll.
Reducing Madness
A pokemon's Madness level can be reduced by 1 by making a Charm or Intimidate roll against the appropriate DC. This can only be attempted once every 5 minutes per pokemon.
A pokemon's Madness level is set to 0 after a defeat or after a full day has passed.
Level 0: Normal pokemon behaviour. Most pokemon will act in a neutral, perhaps even friendly way.
Level 1: Sudden, unaccounted flashes of anger. The pokemon will suddenly and briefly display acts of aggression. Friendly pokemon may attempt to ward off or flee from humans and tamed pokemon in order to avoid injuring them. DC 12
Level 2: Constant anger. The pokemon will display constant warnings of aggression. Any perceived aggression from humans or tamed pokemon will be reacted to violently. DC 15
Level 3: Immediately pursues and attacks all humans and tamed pokemon it can find. DC 30
Mad Chosen
While Chosen are often respected for their role in keeping the light of humankind alive, just as often, they are feared for their potential in becoming a Mad Chosen.
Though all Chosen have received training enough to resist the Madness that would infect them through their link to their pokemon, there are two taboos that are not to be broken, for breaking them inevitably leads to the Madness.
1. No Tribe's magic allows a Chosen to keep more than 6 pokemon tamed. To exceed that makes the pressure of the Madness too strong for any Chosen to resist. Sooner or later, all who break this taboo are lost.
2. No Chosen can have a non-Underdog pokemon tamed. In a non-Underdog pokemon, the Madness is too great for the taming magics and instead feed on it. This gives great power to the pokemon, increasing its stats by 51 points, but the strain on the Chosen is much too great and they quickly break under it.
Mad Chosen keep their wits, abilities and connections to their pokemon, but they are now subject to Madness. A Mad Chosen doesn't gain Madness from their pokemon.
Madness in Mad Chosen
A Mad Chosen gains a Madness level
1. When they or their pokemon encounter a group of humans or tame pokemon.
2. For each round they or their pokemon interact with humans or tame pokemon if their Madness level was not reduced in that round.
3. When they or their pokemon are attacked by a human or tamed pokemon.
At Madness level 0 and 1, a Mad Chosen can resist a Madness level increase by making a Focus roll with a DC 30.
All of a Mad Chosen's pokemon's Madness level is always equal to the Mad Chosen's Madness level.
Reducing Mad Chosen Madness
A Mad Chosen's Madness level can be reduced by 1 or maintained by making a Charm or Intimidate roll against a DC 30. This can only be attempted once per round.
A Mad Chosen's Madness level is set to 0 after a defeat or after a full day has passed.
Notes
It may be interesting to have each player describe their character's Tribe, how thay were chosen and the way their taming magic works.
Mad Chosen should definitely only be NPCs and players should be strongly encouraged not to tame any pokemon which can evolve past Underdog.
